Located just north of South Bend Indiana, You will find Notre Dame, Indiana. There you will find the University of Notre Dame. While it is known as being a prestigious academic university, they are also known for their sports teams. Most famously, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Recently FanSided’s Eric Boggs took a look into Ohio State vs Oregon. Now we will look into the Ohio State football team vs Notre Dame.

Ohio State football and Notre Dame football are two of the biggest programs in America. They are also two of the oldest programs. However, despite being relatively close to one another, they have only played seven times according to Winsipedia. They first squared off in 1935.

The Fighting Irish took home the victory that day, 18-13 and the following year would beat the Buckeyes again, 7-2. However, those would be the last victories for Notre Dame, as Ohio State leads the all-time series, 5-2.

It would be sixty years before these two would face again in the middle of the ’90s when Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in both games. They would face off in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, where Ohio State won 34-20. Ten years later, they would face off again in the Fiesta Bowl with the Buckeyes sending the Fighting Irish back to Indiana with a loss, 44-28.

Last season a former Buckeye made himself an enemy in Marcus Freeman. He was the new Notre Dame coach and was making many fans angry with his comments about Ohio State. He brought the Fighting Irish into Columbus, and left with a loss, 21-10.

Ohio State will play at Notre Dame for the first time since John Cooper was walking the sidelines facing off against Lou Holtz in 1996. The Buckeyes won that game, 29-16.

With conference realignment and a feeling of the unknown amongst us all, it will be interesting to see where and when the next time these two programs will face one another. They are huge brands and bring in huge viewership. They should play more often than just seven times in nearly 100 years.

It also doesn’t help that it seems that Notre Dame has no plans of joining any conference. If they were to join a conference as unlikely as that is, one could assume they would lean ACC as that is where the rest of their sports play. They also played in the ACC when the COVID-19 shortened season occurred. So we will probably not see these two play again for a long time. However, we should cherish the moment that we have of a home and home series between these two.
