Ohio State football Hall of Famer No. 6: Sid Gillman

Many of you have probably never heard of Sid Gillman. He played for the Ohio State football program back in the early 1930s and only played one season of professional football. After that, he got into coaching and really made a name for himself.

Gillman was primarily a coach in the AFL. He actually won the AFL Championship as the head coach of the Chargers in 1963. He was also voted to be a part of the AFL All-Time Team as a coach. He’s in the Chargers Hall of Fame as well.

Gillman was named to both the Chargers’ 40th and 50th Anniversary teams as the coach. He was one of the coaches that everyone respected in the early days of professional football and helped make it was it is today. That’s why he got the recognition that he did.

He is the first player on our list that did not make the Hall of Fame as a player. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1983, the same year that Warfield made it. It’s kind of cool that both Buckeyes got to go into the Hall of Fame in the same class.

The next player on our list got into the Hall of Fame as a player but might be more well-known as a coach.
