Ohio State Football: RB depth will help turn running game around
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program had an issue with running the ball last season at times against some of the better teams they faced. They weren’t getting enough push at the line of scrimmage nor were the running backs hitting the holes hard enough. That was because of a rash of injuries at the position.
TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams, and Evan Pryor all had injuries throughout the season. All of them are now healthy and are part of a running back room that has incredible depth now because of the injuries. Backs like Dallan Hayden and Chip Trayanum were thrust into roles sooner than expected.
Even if one of those guys goes down this year, the Buckeyes should be in a better position to weather an injury. They have three or four guys that they can trust to run the ball. Henderson and Williams are obviously the top two guys though.
The Ohio State football team should run the ball better this year strictly because of health at that position. Even though the offensive line is a concern, having a fully healthy Henderson and Williams should help increase the productivity that they have on the ground.
Passing the ball will still be the focal point of the offense. When you have as much talent at wide receiver as this team does, you have to get those guys the ball as much as possible. Still, the running game is important in setting up the pass when it’s working effectively.
We’ll see how much better the Buckeyes run the ball this season with all of the new pieces on offense. Ohio State might have to lean more on the running game early while the new quarterback gets his feet wet. By midseason, the offense should be running like a well-oiled machine.
