The Ohio State football team and defensive line coach Larry Johnson missed out on a defensive tackle prospect that the Buckeyes wanted.

The Ohio State football program missed out on a coveted defensive tackle recruit last week when Jayden Jackson, of IMG Academy in Florida, announced his commitment to the University of Oklahoma.

Jackson, a four-star recruit ranked No. 445 nationally by 247 Sports, picked the Sooners over Ohio State, Florida, and Miami. This is a surprising choice for Jackson, who had been seen as a Buckeye lean for some time now. He took an official visit to Columbus in early June and all indications were that things went extremely well during the visit.

It could be that Jackson saw the top defensive tackle in the country, Justin Scott, commit to Ohio State and that he didn’t want to become part of a log jam at the defensive tackle position. Ultimately though, Jackson is somebody that defensive line coach Larry Johnson wanted to add to this class as he and his staff identified early and recruited him.

Ohio State would certainly like to add a second interior defensive lineman to the 2024 class. The top remaining targets on that list include Dominick McKinley and Aydin Breland. McKinley would be a massive addition to the class as he’s the No. 38 national player and is bordering on five-star status.

Breeland would be the big prize though, as he is a five-star player from Mater Dei High School in California. Ohio State has made inroads at the school recently so we’re about to see if that can pay off in Breeland’s recruitment.

Ohio State could also still be in on top 100 national player Charleston Collins, who is currently committed to Arkansas. The Little Rock native committed to his home state school back in April but that apparently hasn’t stopped Larry Johnson and Ohio State from recruiting him.

Either way, the Buckeyes lost out on a defensive tackle that they thought they were in on. Hopefully, they can add one more interior defensive lineman to this class as things start to shake out this summer and fall.
