The most underrated coach with the Ohio State Football program
By Ryan Stano
We talk a lot about certain coaches within the Ohio State football program. We talk about how we’ll learn about Tim Walton and Perry Eliano’s coaching abilities this year. Ryan Day is being talked about as overrated by some Buckeye fans too. But rarely do we talk about the underrated coaches.
That’s what we will do today. The success that the Ohio State football team has had in the last four years doesn’t all come down to Day. His assistants have helped him a bunch and Day would be the first one to tell you that. I think one, in particular, needs more recognition.
That coach is Tony Alford. The running backs coach has done a really good job of recruiting and developing talent since he’s been with the Buckeyes. He’s been with Ohio State since the 2015 season and has brought in a lot of great backs.
Players like JK Dobbins, TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams, and Trey Sermon have all thrived under Alford. He recruited all of them to Ohio State from the start of their careers except for Sermon. Alford clearly can recruit extremely well.
Dobbins might be the best running back Ohio State has had in 20 years. Henderson burst on like a flash during his freshman season before getting hurt last year. Sermon holds the single-game record for most rushing yards. Alford helped with all of that.
I hope the Buckeyes can run the ball better this year. Injuries really hurt their ability to have reliable production at the running back position. Everyone should be healthy going into this season, plus they have depth that was created because of those injuries last year.
Alford is a great coach that Day should keep around for as long as he can. He’s really good at what he does.
