The Ohio State football team had a massive weekend on the recruiting front. Their efforts helped leap them over Michigan in recruiting rankings.

The Ohio State football team and head coach Ryan Day had a busy weekend of recruiting that culminated in the verbal commitments of two top players. Glenville’s Bryce West and Damarion Witten committed to the home-state team within a 24-hour span of each other.

These were massive gets for the Buckeyes, especially West, who is a top-50 national player at cornerback. The need for talented players in the secondary is apparent, and keeping an in-state kid with five-star potential is crucial for cornerbacks coach Tim Walton. It was also important because Michigan went after West hard and came up empty.

These two four-star commitments have helped Ohio State leapfrog Michigan in the 2024 247Sports recruiting rankings. Wolverines’ fans have had their chests out for a few months about these rankings and now it’s time for them to sit back down and be where they belong.

Ohio State is currently sitting at No. 2 with only 16 commitments compared to Michigan’s 23. There is no doubt that Michigan got off to a fast start for this 2024 class, but most of its commitments are coming from four and three-star athletes.

In terms of average recruit ranking, Ohio State crushes Michigan with an average of 93.31. The Wolverines’ average recruit comes in at 90.64, which is a pretty big gap when compared to the Scarlet and Gray.

I would expect this gap to widen as we get closer to the season and eventually signing day in December. The Buckeyes are still in on a number of four- and five-star recruits while Michigan’s class is just about full.

The Buckeyes are still below Georgia, who already have 21 commitments of their own. Let’s see if Ohio State can creep up on the Bulldogs as these classes take shape over the next few months.
