Ohio State Football: Putting together the all-time Jim Tressel team
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State Football All-Time Jim Tressel team, Wide Receiver: Anthony Gonzalez
Another great receiver under Jim Tressel was Anthony Gonzalez. Gonzalez wasn’t utilized as a number-one option under Tressel, but he was really good anyway. He finished his Ohio State football career with 87 catches for 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Gonzalez also has a defining Ohio State moment. In the 2005 Michigan game, he caught a leaping first down inside the red zone that kept the game alive for the Buckeyes. That catch helped the Buckeyes score the game-winning touchdown on that drive.
One of the things that made Gonzalez so good was his speed. He was utilized in the slot for most of his career because of that. He was able to get open over the middle and was tough enough to take some brutal hits. That made him an extremely valuable player.
As we told you last month, Gonzalez’s NFL career didn’t exactly go as planned. He remains one of the biggest busts in Ohio State football history as far as his NFL career is concerned. It’s a shame because he had a real opportunity to help a Colts team that was already really good.
That doesn’t change how good he was for the Buckeyes. He was a player that could be counted on to make a big play in a big game. He was someone that Tressel trusted and that says a lot about him. When his playing career was done, he went into politics and just finished up his term.
Now that the skill positions are done, we take a look at the offensive line.
