Two Ohio State Buckeyes start their US Open journey today
By Ryan Stano
Today is the start of the US Open out at Los Angeles Country Club. It’s the first US Open played in LA in about 70 years. Two Ohio State Buckeyes will be starting their rounds today hoping to pull off the impossible and win one of golf’s four majors.
The first is a former Ohio State Buckeye. Ryan Armour will be trying to win his second PGA Tour event this week, having captured his only other win back in 2017. Armour was a Third-Team All-American in 1998 when he played for the Buckeyes and was an All-Big Ten selection in both 1995 and 1998.
Armour tees off at 10:18 ET this morning, so we’ll see what he can do early on. The conditions are supposed to be a bit easier for those going off in the morning on Thursday and in the afternoon on Friday, just as Armour is scheduled to. Hopefully, he can take advantage of that.
The second Buckeye is actually a current Ohio State golfer. Maxwell Moldovan actually got in as a first alternate after someone pulled out. Moldovan had finished just behind the players who won the final spots in qualifying in central Ohio a couple of weeks ago.
Moldovan tees off at 3:26 pm ET so he goes off quite a bit later than Armour. He was a unanimous First-Team All-Big Ten selection in both 2022 and 2023. This will be his second US Open as he was able to play in last year’s US Open at The Country Club.
We wish both Ohio State Buckeyes luck! I’ll certainly be watching the coverage all day so hopefully, I’ll have some good scores to report on both of these guys. It’s certainly going to be one of the toughest tests in golf they’ll play all year.
