Ohio State Buckeyes: OSU earned the most revenue in the country
By Ryan Stano
We all know that the Ohio State Buckeyes athletic department is a cash cow, especially the football program. They bring in a ton of money for the athletic department every year. Some of that is through the fans showing up at home games while others are part of their TV deal with various networks.
No matter how they get their money, they get it. That’s why fans are so frustrated by some of the things Gene Smith has been saying about the Shoe. In any case, we now know how much money they raked in for the 2022 season, and it’s quite a lot of dough.
The Ohio State Buckeyes brought in $252 million through the entire athletic department according to USA Today. That ranks as the most in the country. Second on the list is Texas, which brought in $239 million. So the Buckeyes brought in $13 million more than the second-place university.
Both of those universities have massive football programs, so you know that’s where the bulk of that revenue is generated. Clearly, football is why these programs are moving from different conferences all the time. That’s what drives the revenue and this is evidence of that.
Of course, when you earn a lot of money you can spend a lot of money. Ohio State had the most expenses as an athletic department as well, spending almost $226 million. That just barely edged out Texas. Again, a large chunk of that is spent on the Ohio State football program.
I’m not surprised by these figures. I’m only surprised that Smith doesn’t think they can afford to spend on other things, like winterizing the Shoe for potential playoff games. That’s what frustrates me as an Ohio State football fan, especially when the athletic department made almost $60 million in just ticket sales.
If you’re going to charge me more every year for my season tickets, the least you can do is make sure I have the best experience possible.
