Ohio State football career passing leader No. 5: Joe Germaine

  • 6,370 yards passing
  • 56 TDs
  • 20 INTs
  • 59.2% completion

The 1998 team was one of the best teams in Ohio State history to not win a national championship. Joe Germaine was the leader of that team. He was actually really good in that season, throwing for 3,330 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just 7 interceptions.

For his career, Germaine finished with 6,370 yards passing, 56 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. The problem for Germaine, which wasn’t totally his fault, was his loss in big games. In both 1996 and 1998, the only losses for the Buckeyes were to Michigan and Michigan State. In ’96 he wasn’t even the full-time starter either.

Had the Buckeyes won both of those games, they would have been national champions. Germaine did lead the Buckeyes to an improbable comeback in that memorable 1997 Rose Bowl against Arizona State. That is arguably Germaine’s finest moment as a Buckeye.

Ultimately, Germaine’s career gets lost sometimes in Ohio State lore because of John Cooper’s inability to win big games against inferior competition. He’s still a top-five passer in Ohio State history, which is a heck of an accomplishment to be proud of.

The next player on this list is another quarterback from the 90s that was part of an all-time great Ohio State team.
