Ohio State football career passing leader No. 8: Troy Smith

  • 5,720 yards passing
  • 54 TDs
  • 13 INTs
  • 62.7% completion

There has been only one Heisman Trophy winner at Ohio State in the last 20 years and that was Troy Smith. He had one of the best seasons in program history back in 2006 when he led the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season record and a National Championship Game appearance.

After battling Justin Zwick for the job in 2004, Smith finally took over the starting gig in 2005. He was able to fully realize his potential in that 2006 season, finishing a Heisman campaign with 2,542 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions. He also ran for 204 yards and a touchdown.

Smith had the highest margin of victory in the Heisman Trophy ceremony in history up until Joe Burrow in 2019. That’s how dominant of a player he was that season. He also beat the number-two team in the country twice that season by beating Texas and TTUN.

When his career was over, Smith finished with 5,720 yards passing. He completed 62.7% of his passes and had 54 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions. For an offense that was fairly conservative under Jim Tressel, those are great numbers.

Smith has his number up in the rafters at OSU, as he should. He’s one of the best quarterbacks to ever come through Ohio State and was just a winner. He made the right play when it needed to be made.

The next player on this list is probably the second-most famous quarterback of the 90s for Ohio State football fans.
