Ohio State football career passing leader No. 9: Mike Tomczak

  • 5,569 passing yards
  • 32 TDS
  • 36 INTs
  • 55.7% completion

Mike Tomczak was known more for his NFL career than he was for his Ohio State football career.  He was Ohio State’s quarterback in the early 80s and actually was quite a prolific passer for someone in that era of football.

Playing for Earle Bruce, Tomczak put up some strong numbers. He was the starter for the Buckeyes for three seasons and accumulated 5,569 passing yards over the course of his career. He also had 32 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Tomczak was not known as an accurate quarterback. In fact, he completed just 55.7% of his passes in his career. His touchdown to interception ratio was also not very strong. But what he did do is lead the Buckeyes to 9 wins every year he was a starter.

After his collegiate career, Tomczak actually stuck around in the NFL for quite a long time. He was undrafted before getting picked up by the Bears. He played for Chicago, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and Cleveland in a career that went on much longer than someone that went on undrafted should.

Tomczak ended up playing 15 years in the NFL after what ended up being a top-ten passing career in Ohio State football history. That’s not a bad way to make a living, even if most of his career was as a backup. Those checks certainly still cash!

The next player on this list has an argument as the greatest Ohio State quarterback ever.
