For the first time since the 2021 season, the Ohio State football team is having a quarterback battle for the starting job. Unlike at that time, this is just a two-person race. It’s between Kyle McCord, who lost in 2021 to C.J. Stroud, and Devin Brown.

Heading into the 2021 season, we all kind of knew it was going to be Stroud’s job as Fall approached. He had played well in the Spring and had the upper hand in knowing the offense for a full year. Neither McCord nor Jack Miller had that much knowledge of the offense.

Things are a little bit different this time around. While McCord has been in the program for three years, he didn’t look that great in Spring. He had one start in 2021 against Akron that was also full of mixed reviews. Brown has had a full year in the offense as well.

Should Ohio State football fans be concerned that there is no consensus on who is going to win this battle? McCord definitely has the lead, but it will be a true battle into the Fall. If he had balled out in the Spring Game, he could have shut the door on Brown right then and there.

Instead, there is uncertainty around this position. I tend to think that whoever wins the job will be really good. Ryan Day has had an enormous amount of success with whoever he’s had at quarterback since he’s been on staff with the Buckeyes. I see no reason why that would stop now.

This is definitely something to monitor though. I’m not taking for granted that this will automatically be a smooth transition, even with the best group of receivers in the country. Fans should still wait until a couple of weeks of Fall practice have happened before making any conclusions.
