The Ohio State football team was in need of some linebackers. The ones they had weren’t getting the job done, nor was there enough depth to make a change that was going to work. Then Steele Chambers decided to make a position change.

Chambers stuck in a loaded running back room. Sitting behind Master Teague and Trey Sermon on the depth chart, he didn’t see a path to playing time at the running back position. Then he decided to become a linebacker. Now, he’s one of the Ohio State football team’s most reliable defenders.

Since making the move two years ago, Chambers has rapidly improved as a linebacker. He’s learned how to shoot the gap to take down running backs and has gotten pretty darn good in coverage. When he’s on the field, he doesn’t make many mistakes.

Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg are the undisputed top two linebackers on this team. Both of them have earned the trust of the coaching staff. More than that is that they make plays. Chambers had a pick in the Peach Bowl against Georgia last season, perhaps the only memorable defensive play the Buckeyes made in that game.

This is Chambers’ chance to shine. He’s had enough full off-seasons at linebacker to no longer need to think so much. The same can be said now that he’s had a year in Jim Knowles’ system. This should be the season where it all comes together for him. This should be his best season.

If Chambers is able to have his best season, his draft stock is going to go up. I’m not sure what he projects at right now, but he still hasn’t hit his ceiling. This is a year where he can show scouts that he’s a guy that can truly impact a team at the professional level.
