Ohio State Football: Five most memorable plays from the 2010s
By Ryan Stano
1. 85-yards through the heart of the South
Every single Ohio State football fan knows this play. Choosing this play as the number one play of the 2010s was a no-brainer. It might be one of the most iconic plays in the history of the Ohio State football program. That’s how great it was.
Ohio State was up on Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and was trying to hold on to the victory. They were up 34-28 with just under four minutes left in the game. They were doing their best to run the clock and keep Alabama from getting the ball back again.
Then it happened. Ezekiel Elliott got the ball and ran 85 yards through the heart of the South. He was helped by an excellent block by Evan Spencer, his second big play in that game. Elliott scored and gave the Buckeyes a 40-28 lead. They then converted a two-point conversion to go up 14.
After that play, I knew the Buckeyes were going to play for a national championship. There wasn’t enough time left on the clock for Bama to score. In my mind, that play sealed the deal. I was actually not afraid of Oregon after this game. I thought if they could beat Bama, Oregon would be a cakewalk.
We know that it was and Ohio State beat Oregon for their first national championship since 2002. it’s been almost ten years since that fateful run with a third-string quarterback to that title. It still remains one of the great national titles anyone has ever won.
That’s the list! What do you guys think? Do you have any other plays that should have made the list?
