The Ohio State football rivalry with TTUN was defined by Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. Woody and Bo gave the rivalry a national cache that it had lacked before the Ten-Year War. Both programs are better off because of that period of history.

Recently, TTUN decided to hire Bo’s son Shemy Schembechler. He had been hired as the Assistant Director of Recruiting. Jim Harbaugh decided that he wanted someone from that historical past to be involved in the program today. That didn’t last long.

Soon after his hiring, people found tweets that he had liked that had racial connotations. Within a couple of days, despite the University of Michigan scrubbing his Twitter account the best that they could, there were calls for Schembechler to resign his post immediately. He obliged.

While I won’t be posting any of the liked tweets here, they are easy to find if you know where to look. It’s a really bad look for the program to hire a guy like this and for Harbaugh not to vet a new hire like this to prevent any problems that could arise.

This comes after a controversy involving Bo’s possible knowledge of a doctor sexually abusing players over the course of several years. Despite the Schembechler’s legacy as a family at TTUN, controversy continues to follow them. It’s not a good look for the university.

As rivals of the Ohio State football program, I honestly hope that they can promote a culture that is healthier. There’s a reason the Buckeyes moved on from Urban Meyer. They needed a culture shift. I wonder if Harbaugh is smart enough to do the same.

dark. Next. Three defenders with the most to prove

Harbaugh has now bought as much time as he wants at Michigan after beating Ohio State back-to-back years. We’ll see if the Buckeyes can break that trend this season.
