Ohio State Football: What QB should Buckeyes recruit in 2025?
The Ohio State football program and head coach Ryan Day have to figure out what type of QB they want to recruit for the 2025 class.
The Ohio State football program is becoming known as “QBU.” Much of the success that Ryan Day has had in developing three straight first-round NFL draft picks at quarterback has been monumental in terms of getting high-end talent on campus in Columbus.
But with the 2024 quarterback and top-75 national recruit, Air Noland, appearing to be locked in with Ohio State, the Buckeyes shift to 2025 quarterback recruiting. Ohio State has only offered two QB recruits thus far in the class.
Five-star, top-five national player Bryce Underwood of Belleville, Michigan is the consensus top QB prospect in this class. The other offer is to Findlay Ohio’s own Ryan Montgomery, brother of Ohio State offensive tackle Luke Montgomery.
This is going to be a fascinating recruiting period for Ryan Day and quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis. Do they swing for the fences as they did in previous classes with former No. 1 QB recruits Quinn Ewers and Dylan Raiola, or do they play it safe with the homegrown talent in Montgomery?
Montgomery is no slouch by any means. He is a four-star, top-250 national player and I would not be surprised if he cracks the top 100 after camping this summer. He has excellent arm talent and impressed a lot of people at the Ohio Under Armor camp in Obetz a few weeks ago.
The feeling with this recruitment is very similar to that of Quinn Ewers versus Drew Allar in 2022. Ewers was the big-time national prospect that Ryan Day coveted from the beginning. Leaving Medina’s Drew Allar looking elsewhere. When Ewers surprised everyone by joining the 2021 class late, Allar locked in on Penn State.
Allar was similarly ranked to where Montgomery is now in the recruiting process but as he finished his senior year at Medina High School, most recruiting services gave him a five-star ranking. As soon as Ewers left the Ohio State program, Ryan Day immediately went after Allar, but he was steadfast in his commitment to Penn State.
So, with that history lesson in place, what does Ohio State do? This is a tough position to be in because if the Buckeyes don’t go after Underwood, it’s likely that Michigan will get him. And with Air Noland already locked into the class ahead, will Underwood be interested in being a backup for possibly two seasons?
I for one will be extremely interested in seeing what Ryan Day does as this recruiting class unfolds.
