Former Ohio State football player, Heisman trophy-winning running back, and current Tennessee State head coach Eddie George is heading to the NFL. George received an opportunity through the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship along with former Miami University head coach Randy Shannon, to work with an NFL franchise for a few weeks.

The Chicago Bears, who currently have former Ohio State star quarterback Justin Fields leading their offense, will welcome George and Shannon into their coaching family for this amazing opportunity.

The NFL has used this Fellowship as a means to introduce minority coaching candidates to the league. It offers an opportunity for not only the franchise to get to know these candidates through their work during OTA’s but also offers the candidates an opportunity to try their hand at professional coaching.

All 32 NFL franchises are encouraged to participate each year, and for George, getting this opportunity comes at an interesting time in his career. George is entering his third season as head coach for TSU,  which is a Historical Black College that competes in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The Tigers have an amazing opportunity for national recognition this season when they travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The September 2 showdown will pit two former Ohio State Buckeyes against one another as George will face off against Notre Dame Head Coach Marcus Freeman.

George, who resides in Nashville and has ever since his playing days with the Tennessee Titans, may have some big questions to answer very soon. Does he want to stay in Nashville where he is loved by the Titans faithful along with the TSU fans, and continue to build a small college program?

Could he use this coaching opportunity with the Chicago Bears to catapult himself into a coaching career in the NFL and maybe even with the Tennessee Titans down the road? Does he want to take the Deon Sanders model and stay in college but move up to a bigger Power 5 program?

Eddie is a charismatic individual, and where he wants to go in his coaching career will no doubt be left up to him and his family. One thing is for sure, if he decides to one day return to Ohio State, they will welcome him home with open arms.
