Ohio State Football: TTUN has finally caught up in recruiting
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program briefly held the title of the best recruiting class in the country for the 2024 class. Right now, they have 13 commits and two five-star recruits among those commits. Unfortunately, their biggest rival currently holds that coveted top spot.
TTUN has 15 commits and just one five-star commit. Ohio State can still easily catch them for that top spot considering they have two fewer commits, but one thing can’t be denied anymore; TTUN has caught up to the Ohio State football program in recruiting.
For most of the last 20 years, Ohio State has dominated the Big Ten on the recruiting trail. In fact, every year since 2011 except for one has seen Ohio State with the top recruiting class in the conference. The only time it wasn’t was in 2019 when the program shifted from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day as head coach.
This year is different. TTUN is actually close to the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail. Even if Ohio State does eventually pass them in the rankings by the end of the year, they have shown that they are committed to getting the best talent. That didn’t use to be the case.
It’s clear that winning the last two against the Buckeyes has really pumped things up for the Wolverines. The Buckeyes won’t win games against them just on pure talent now. That talent gap is shrinking, so it will now come down to coaching. That’s something Day needs to be prepared for.
Gone are the days of Buckeye fans not worrying about The Game because it was a foregone conclusion that Ohio State would win. Now it’s a real rivalry again. It’s a rivalry the Buckeyes have been on the wrong side of for two straight years.
It’s not just a rivalry on the field any more either. It’s one of the recruiting trail too.
