The Ohio State basketball team has added two players from the transfer portal. Chris Holtmann has clearly been very active with the portal in his coaching tenure. He has grabbed several players from the portal over the course of the last six seasons.

Now he has grabbed another one. Now the Buckeyes have Evan Mahaffey. Mahaffey was a freshman at Penn State after leaving the Cincinnati area where he is from. In his freshman season, Mahaffey averaged 2.8 points per game and shot 57% from the field.

Mahaffey stands at 6’6 and 200 pounds, so he’s got good size for a wing. The Buckeyes think he has a lot of potential despite him not playing a lot of minutes last season. In fact, he played just 9.8 minutes a game. He’s hoping to get more playing time with the Buckeyes.

I think it will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets and what he can bring to the team. The Ohio State basketball team has plenty of roster turnover this season, so getting another guy with size who can defend multiple positions is good for a team that struggled on that end of the court.

I don’t know what his exact role for the team will be yet. My assumption is that he will come off the bench, but will still get more playing time than he did with Penn State. 15-17 minutes off the bench might be the best thing for him right now with how young the rest of the team is.

Holtmann loves using the transfer portal. We’ll see if his use of it can help the Buckeyes win more games this season. With such a young team and a lack of veteran leadership, it’s going to be interesting to see how well they play this season after they missed the NCAA Tournament last year.
