Ohio State Football: Buckeyes might add another DB from portal
The Ohio State football team might be interested in adding one more player from the transfer portal. Former UAB defensive back Jaylen Key is on their radar.
The Ohio State football team is still looking in the transfer portal to help out their roster in 2023. Former UAB defensive back Jaylen Key has been contacted by Ryan Day and his staff and is set to visit Columbus this upcoming weekend.
This comes after Key tweeted out earlier this week that the Buckeyes made his final list of potential schools. Ohio State joins Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, Ole Miss, and North Carolina on that list.
Key had an outstanding 2022 season for the Blazers as he registered 60 tackles, one sack, three picks, and two forced fumbles. It appears that Key has only one more season of eligibility as he came out in the 2018 recruiting cycle.
I wonder what this has to say about the current safety situation at Ohio State that the coaches are still looking to add a player, granted Key is a veteran with a proven track record. The Buckeyes are bringing back starter Lathan Ransom who figures to have a big role in the defense, but the other two spots are question marks. Cam Martinez and Syracuse transfer J’Had Carter are battling for the nickel safety spot while Josh Proctor and Sonny Styles are looking to earn reps at the third safety position.
I would hate to see a five-star player in Sonny Styles lose out on reps to an incoming transfer. This defense needs talented athletes and that’s exactly what Styles is. Let him learn and play through the growing pains.
