Why does Ohio State Football keep losing receivers?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has just had another receiver enter the transfer portal. Kaleb Brown followed his receiver classmate Caleb Burton into the transfer portal. The Buckeyes have now lost two receivers in a matter of just a couple of weeks.
What’s going on? Why are the Buckeyes losing some receivers? It’s supposed to be the best receiver room in the country and it’s supposed to have the most depth. Losing two receivers who were four-star recruits is certainly not something that would be ideal.
In this case, this is perfectly fine. Brian Hartline has another filthy class of receivers coming in next season. He already has two five-star recruits for the 2024 class. They were likely going to pass both Burton and Brown on the depth chart anyway because of their talent.
Not only were the two incoming freshmen going to pass them up on the depth chart, but Carnell Tate likely already has this season as a freshman. Quite simply, these guys saw that they were never going to play for the Ohio State football team. It made sense for them to leave.
Now, if we see a third receiver exit the program, that might be cause for concern. Even with Brown and Burton leaving this team still has plenty of talent in the receiver room. The Buckeyes won’t be hurting for pass-catchers this season or next with the group of guys they still have.
I am a little surprised at the timing though. I would have thought these guys left closer to when the Spring Game ended. Instead, they waited a couple of weeks to make this decision. There are still plenty of programs that can use receiver help that will look in the portal.
I wish nothing but the best for both of these young men. Hopefully, they can both become impact players at their next destination.
