Ohio State basketball loses guard to transfer portal
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team has added a couple of players from the transfer portal this offseason. It’s a tool that Chris Holtmann seems to enjoy using. Unfortunately, a decent amount of Buckeyes have opted to use it themselves to leave the program.
The latest to do that is Tanner Holden. Holden actually transferred in from Wright State a year ago after having averaged 20 points per game. He was very far from that average with the Buckeyes last season, putting in just 3.6 points per game in just 27 games
Holden never quite found his footing in Columbus. He played just 13.6 minutes a game. I thought he was going to have a much bigger impact on the team than he ended up having. I thought he was a guy that you could give the ball to and he could get some buckets.
That turned out to not be the case. This isn’t surprising to see him leave though. It was a miserable year for him and the playing time wasn’t slated to be much better after another good recruiting class came in this year. It makes sense for him to go somewhere else.
Holden might not be an impact guy at the Power 5 level, but he could be a good scorer in a lower conference. He just needs a coach that will give him the playing time to allow him to get some shots up and get points on the board. Holtmann never trusted him that way in Columbus.
We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. This is the second time he’ll be transferring schools, so hopefully he picks the right one this time.
