The Ohio State football team will be getting used to a new rules change that is affecting the entire landscape of college football. In order to shorten the length of games, the clock will no longer stop after first downs unless it is under two minutes. That’s a significant change.

We knew this change was coming for a while. Even though I don’t agree with it (if you want to have shorter games, don’t have three-and-a-half-minute-long commercial breaks every four seconds), it’s here to stay. So how will this new rule affect the Buckeyes?

On offense, this doesn’t change a whole lot for the Buckeyes. Under Ryan Day, the offense has shown the ability to strike fast or take some time off the clock, depending on the situation. They won’t be affected very much at all in my opinion.

Defensively, I think this changes things a bit. Ohio State has had issues allowing big plays in games. They have also had issues getting off the field. If this rule change goes into effect, the Ohio State football team might have their defense out there too long.

Teams can now run the clock a lot easier on the Buckeyes and keep their high-powered offense off the field. That’s something that could keep them from winning games if they can’t improve on the defensive side of the ball. TTUN ate up the clock in 2021 and 2022 en route to beating the Buckeyes.

I think this is something that the Buckeyes will figure out how to deal with. It’s all up to the defense. If they can’t get off the field fast enough, then the offense will have a lot of pressure on them to score even faster than they already do.

I am excited to have games no longer be 4 hours long. That’s just too much, especially when you’re going to a game in person.
