Ohio State Football: What’s the floor for the 2023 team?
By Ryan Stano
We know that every year is championship-or-bust for the Ohio State football team. That’s what fans demand year in and year out, no matter what the roster looks like. They have been one of the top programs in the country for the last decade or so, so that’s not an unfair expectation.
But if you look at the roster for the 2023 season, a lot of players are stepping into new roles. There will be a new starter at quarterback. There will be a new center and two new offensive tackles. On defense, there will be a new safety and a couple of new starting defensive ends. Heck, there could even be a new play-caller.
With all of that being said, what is the floor for this Ohio State football team? We know that the ceiling for them is a national championship winner because of all of the skill guys they still have. But what is the worst-case scenario for this group based on the schedule?
Personally, I think it’s 10-2. Ohio State plays two really tough road games this year at Notre Dame and at Michigan. Notre Dame is still very winnable because they lost their best offensive player in tight end Michael Mayer, but The Game is much scarier for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State faces the prospect of losing to TTUN for the third-straight time. That hasn’t happened since the 90s. I can’t even say that won’t happen because of the beatings they’ve taken over the last couple of years. It’s by far the toughest game on their schedule.
If Ohio State does get by Notre Dame, the only other game I could see them possibly losing is at home to Penn State. That’s the only other team that has the talent to possibly keep up with them. I don’t think they will though.
If the Buckeyes go 10-2, this season is a disaster. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen.
