Ohio State Football: The one Spring transfer portal player OSU needs
The Ohio State football team needs a new starting tackle. There is one player in the Spring portal window that they need to get.
The Ohio State football team just wrapped up Spring ball last Saturday in Ohio Stadium with the Spring Game. The game taught us a few things about this roster and what the Buckeyes need improvement on before the start of fall camp.
If there is one thing that the Spring has taught us, it’s that Ohio State cannot go into the 2023 season with these offensive tackles. Left tackle Josh Fryar is fine but he’s better suited to play on the right side. That is where he started for an injured Dewand Jones last season against Indiana and the offense didn’t miss a beat.
The battle between Zen Michalski and Tegra Tshabola has left little to be desired at right tackle. As much as I want to give these guys an opportunity, Ryan Day owes it to this offense to get a quality starting left tackle from the portal.
That is why Ohio State needs to look at Courtland Ford, a former starting offensive tackle at USC. Ford started eight games in 2021 before a leg injury forced him to miss the last portion of the Trojans’ schedule that season. Ford started three games at left tackle last season as he was again battling injuries all year long. He’s got 20 career starts under his belt, mostly at left tackle, and would instantly become an upgrade over Michalski or Tshabola.
Ohio State would need to act fast on Ford though as he’s set to visit Kentucky over the weekend. Now is Ford going to be Parris Johnson? Absolutely not. But he gives you a Power Five quality starting left tackle and a proven commodity.
Again, Ryan Day owes it to this team to field the best offensive line possible. With dynamic skill position players, this offense could be one of the best in college football again if the line doesn’t implode.
