The Ohio State football team learned a few things about its true freshmen this Spring, including one wide receiver that has earned playing time in 2023.

The Ohio State football team held its annual Spring Game last Saturday in Ohio Stadium. There were a number of things that we learned from the game but at the top of that list has to include what Carnell Tate has accomplished this Spring.

The true freshman wide receiver, who was a borderline five-star recruit, has opened some eyes in Spring camp. He was the first true freshman to lose his black stripe and it happened pretty quickly. He has impressed not only with his play on the field and athletic abilities but also with his work ethic and effort off the field.

Ryan Day had this to say on Tate earlier this Spring, via SI.com

"“The feedback we are getting from academics, nutrition, strength and conditioning, position coaches, strength and development, everybody has such great things to say about him.”"

It showed up on Saturday in the Shoe as he caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Kyle McCord. It’s pretty clear that Tate is the next in a long line of great Ohio State receivers in recent history. The question has to be why wait? Why wait on a kid who is clearly the third or fourth-best option at his position already?

Hopefully, Brian Hartline and Ryan Day agree. The kid has the “it” factor that Marvin Harrison Jr., Chris Olave, and Garrett Wilson all have. I for one am excited to see how quickly he can adapt to the college game. But judging from the Spring game, he’s just about already there.

Next. It’s time to look in portal for OT. dark

If there is one thing that we have learned about the receiver position this Spring, it’s that Tate is going to be special. Get him on the field and playing early in the season so, come season’s end, he’s ready to help the Buckeyes in the games that matter most.
