Ohio State Football: 3 losers from the Spring Game
By Ryan Stano
3. Cade Stover
The Ohio State football team has a history of not using their tight ends often. With Jeremy Ruckert gone, it was up to Cade Stover to be the weapon at tight end last season. For the first part of the year, he was exactly that. He was making plays with the ball in his hands and was a good blocker.
After a great game against Penn State, things went downhill. He dropped a touchdown pass against Michigan, had a horrible personal foul penalty called on him, and got called for a holding. That all happened in just one game! His follow-up performance against Georgia was bad too.
Stover admitted that he played hurt at the end of last year and he was looking forward to being a lot better this year. Well, he looked like the same old bad Cade Stover on Saturday. He dropped an easy touchdown pass in the first half that bounced right off his hands.
His blocking was average I guess, but that dropped TD is really what stood out. Ohio State has so many weapons at the wide receiver position that they don’t really need someone at tight end who is a big weapon in the passing game. But they need someone who can block.
If Stover can’t do either of those things, Ryan Day might opt to put someone in there who can. Freshman Jelani Thurman has been getting rave reviews from practice this Spring. Maybe he should get some reps out there to see what he can do.
As someone who’s been in the program for as long as he has, I expected better from Stover. I really expected more from all of the guys on this list. Hopefully, they take the Summer to get better and be the players we all expected them to be this year.
