The Ohio State football team had its Spring Game on Saturday afternoon. It was our first look at the new roster after having fallen just one game short of playing for a national title a year ago. There were several things that I was very eager to see on both sides of the ball.

We talked about the winners of the Spring Game yesterday. While there were quite a few, there were also some losers from the game. These were players who were expected to play well or show that they had improved. Instead, they came out with duds.

Before we get into the list of players who I would consider losers, let me emphasize one thing: it’s still Spring. These guys all have plenty of time to get better and improve before the season actually starts. This game is just a snapshot of where they are right now.

With that being said, I was hoping the number one guy on this list would be way further along than what he showed on Saturday.

1. Kyle McCord

Kyle McCord had a wonderful opportunity presented to him on Saturday. With Devin Brown not being able to play because of an injury to his throwing hand, McCord had an opportunity to seize the lead in the quarterback battle to become the next signal caller with the Ohio State football program.

Instead, we saw a lot of things that left me concerned. He finished just 18-34 for 182 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t look comfortable in the pocket and didn’t try to push the ball down the field very often. Frankly, he didn’t look very accurate either.

Some of those issues could be attributed to the play-calling of Brian Hartline, who I didn’t think have a great day calling plays for the first time. Even so, I thought McCord’s decision-making was poor at times and he tried to fit the ball into windows he shouldn’t be throwing.

This leaves the quarterback competition wide open. Brown still has an opportunity to win the job once Fall rolls around. I have to be honest, I’m concerned. I loved McCord coming out of high school. So far, I’ve been wrong about him. I thought he was going to be an instant stud.

Part of the reason McCord wasn’t able to succeed on Saturday has to do with the play of the second group of people on this list.
