The Ohio State football team added a running back yesterday for the 2024 recruiting class. Sam Williams-Dixon committed to the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State football team and running backs coach Tony Alford have to be pleased following yesterday’s Spring Game. Not only did Chip Traynum run for a 65-yard touchdown and all five running backs were suited up for pre-scrimmage drills, but they also received a 2024 verbal commitment.

Three-star tailback and Columbus area native Sam Williams-Dixon gave his verbal commitment yesterday following the Spring Game, giving Alford his second commitment within a two-week span. The Buckeyes got their major running back commitment from four-star, top-70 national recruit, James Peoples. And few weeks back and we told you about the need of adding a second back in the class. Well Alford delivered.

Williams-Dixon is not your typical Buckeye commit but it might appear to be a shift in how Ohio State handles some aspects of recruiting. I believe Ohio State and Ryan Day want to do a better job of locking in Ohio kids early instead of using them as late additions incase their national recruits commit elsewhere.

We saw it when Ryan Day and Corey Dennis tried to add Medina’s Drew Allar late in the 2022 class after Quinn Ewers left. The Buckeyes wound up in good shape with Devin Brown, but to let a five-star quarterback get out of your state wasn’t a great look. Part of the reason was that Allar rose up the rankings late, but I believe that Day doesn’t want to be put in that position again.

I’m not saying Williams-Dixon will rise up to being a five-star talent but it’s clear that Ohio State likes him and instead of waiting to see how he develops, Day and Alford decided to just offer him now and get him in the class.

Next. 3 coaches more annoying than Dabo Swinney. dark

The Buckeyes might still try to add a third back to this class so keep an eye out on Stacey Gage, a four-star back from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida. Ohio State could lose up to three backs after they season and I don’t believe they want to be without five backs in the room.
