Ohio State Football: How to get back on top of the Big Ten
By Ryan Stano
It’s been three seasons since the Ohio State football program won a Big Ten Championship. Ohio State last won the conference back in the pandemic season of 2020 when they also made the National Championship Game before getting smoked in that game by Alabama.
For the last two seasons, it’s been TTUN who has been on top of the Big Ten. They have won back-to-back conference titles since 2003-04. The Buckeyes have been who have kept TTUN from being able to repeat that feat for so long because the Bucks have been on top of the conference.
They no longer are. As much as it pains me to say it, TTUN is the king of the Big Ten at the moment. There’s really only one way for the Bucks to get that crown back; they have to beat Michigan. No one in the West is a true competitor to win the conference.
Every single season, the Big Ten comes down to whoever wins The Game. The winner of that game has won every single Big Ten Title since 2017. It’s going to be that way this year too. Once USC and UCLA enter the league in 2024, things might change.
But for now, the Ohio State football team has one team to go through. In order to beat them, they have to be more physical at the point of attack and have a better secondary. They can’t have guys fall down and miss easy tackles. That’s how TTUN beat the Buckeyes last season.
If they can fix both of those issues this season, they have a good shot at beating TTUN and keeping them from having a three-game winning streak in The Game. If they can’t do that, they will continue to play second fiddle to Michigan in the conference.
That game in late November is going to answer a lot of questions about the future of both programs.
