Ohio State football: Even at OSU, QB recruiting is a winding road
The Ohio State football team usually catches a great quarterback, even though it’s usually an unpredicted route to get there.
The Ohio State football team landed a stud four-star; top-100 quarterback recruit on Saturday night in Air Noland. Noland had offers from the likes of Alabama, Clemson, and Miami so its sounds like the consensus agree that this kid could be great.
And with the quarterback whisper, Ryan Day, hand-picking his quarterbacks, we as Ohio State fans should always agree with his assessment as his last three starting quarterbacks all went on to become first-round NFL draft picks.
But even at a school like Ohio State, which has had much recent success at the position, quarterback recruiting is often unpredictable, even if the end result usually works out. All the way back to 2016 when Dwayne Haskins was a late add to the class, 2017 when five-star Tate Martell committed, and 2018 when Emory Jones de-committed.
As Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State in 2019, Jack Miller was supposed to be his heir to the position until a player named C.J. Stroud was added late in the 2020 class. 2021 brought us the fiasco of Quinn Ewers being at Ohio State for a total of three months.
2023 recruiting saw the verbal commitment and de-commitment of Brock Glenn followed up by the late addition of Lincoln Kienholz. 2024’s saga of the verbal addition and eventual subtraction of No. 1 overall recruit Dylan Raiola. Day corrected that wrong by adding Air Noland over the weekend.
But during that time Ryan Day managed this situation with much success. He successfully brought in Kyl McCord in 2021 as he’s been groomed for two years now to take over this 2023 Ohio State team. He also was able to add a top 50 player in 2022 with Devin Brown.
The twists and turns of quarterback recruiting usually end up with a good result as long as Ryan Day is around. Hopefully, Day can start to build the rest of this 2024 class around his prized quarterback commit, but it’s still a long way until early signing day in December.
