Ohio State football NFL Draft bust No. 3: Dwayne Haskins

2019 NFL Draft, Round 1, Pick 15
Washington Commanders (Redskins/Football Team), 2019-2020
Pittsburgh Steelers, 2021

I was really hoping I wasn’t going to have to include Dwayne Haskins on this list. He set a then-Ohio State record for passing yards in a single season in his magical 2018 season as a starter. That season saw him throw for 5,308 yards and 54 touchdowns.

After that great year, he declared for the NFL Draft and was taken in the 2019 Draft with the 15th overall pick by the Washington Commanders. Haskins never got a fair shake in Washington though. His owner wanted him to start but his coach refused to put him in.

The rift between Jay Gruden and Haskins hurt Haskins’ development. Gruden finally relented and put Haskins in during a Week 4 game. He threw three picks, including a pick-six in that first game. That was a harbinger of things to come for him in Washington.

Haskins would finish his career in Washington after just two seasons despite being the 15th overall pick. He threw for just 2,804 yards and 12 touchdowns in 13 starts. He threw a whopping 14 interceptions as well. Haskins was cut after he went to his girlfriend’s birthday party during the pandemic and didn’t wear a mask. That was the final straw with management.

Haskins clearly needed to grow up and be more mature. he signed with the Steelers in 2021 and served as the third-string quarterback. There was a thought he could potentially take over for Ben Roethlisberger if he could become more mature. He tragically never got that chance.

About a year ago, Haskins was hit by a dump truck while crossing an interstate in Florida. He was there to work out with several other Steelers teammates during the offseason. His car had apparently run out of gas and he was trying to get some from a gas station.

I would’ve liked to have seen if Haskins could’ve revived his career. Unfortunately, we will never know. The next guy on this list is a way less likable guy than Haskins.
