Ohio State football NFL Draft bust No. 8: Jack Mewhort
2014 NFL Draft, Round 2, Pick 59
Indianapolis Colts, 2014-2017
It pains me to put another Colt on this list, but it’s what has to be done. Jack Mewhort was a really good player when he was with the Buckeyes. He was a First Team All-American during his senior season in 2013 and has a tree in Buckeye Grove because of it.
After that, he was taken in the second round in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Mewhort was expected to help keep Andrew Luck upright after he’d taken a beating in his first two NFL seasons. Mewhort was immediately a starter and started 14 games his rookie year.
Just as injuries shortened Luck’s career, they did the same to Mewhort. He had knee injuries that kept cropping up on him and next made him comfortable. After re-signing with the Colts in 2018, he abruptly retired during training camp of that season citing those knee injuries.
Mewhort’s career ended at the age of just 26. It’s really a shame because he was a really good guard for the Colts. He was good at both run blocking and pass blocking. Had he been healthy, perhaps Luck’s career would have been prolonged too.
Unlike the first few guys on this list, the next guy on this list didn’t get hit with injuries. He just flat-out stunk at the NFL level.
