Ohio State basketball gets transfer from Minnesota
By Ryan Stano
Chris Holtmann has not shied away from using the transfer portal since he took over the Ohio State basketball program. Nor should he, quite frankly. It’s a tool that every college coach needs to be utilizing to make sure that their roster is the best that it can possibly be.
Holtmann is using it again this week. He has landed a name that a lot of Ohio State basketball fans should recognize. That name is Jamison Battle out of Minnesota. Battle has played two years with the Golden Gophers and two years at George Washington and will now play a fifth with the Buckeyes.
Battle is a 6’7 forward that gives the Buckeyes a scorer at the wing. He was the second-leading scorer for the Golden Gophers this past year, putting in 12.4 points per game. In the two years prior to that, he had over 17 points per game. He can put it in the hoop.
Scoring is something that the Buckeyes desperately need with the departure of Brice Sensabaugh. We saw last year even with Sensabaugh that the Buckeyes failed to be able to score enough points to compete with most of the teams in the Big Ten Conference.
This is a good get for Holtmann. This is a guy that has proven he can score in the Big Ten. He also rebounds pretty well, having averaged 6.3 boards a couple of years ago. He can shoot from three as well, shooting 35% from deep on 7 attempts a game over the course of his career.
Adding scorers who can space the floor is never a bad thing. Ohio State has struggled to find a shooter who can consistently knock it down from outside the arc. Holtmann is hoping Battle can do just that next season. Hopefully, he can give them a few more wins too.
