The Ohio State football program is in the middle of a quarterback battle now that C.J. Stroud could be the number one pick in the NFL Draft. With him gone, it will either be Kyle McCord or Devin Brown who lead the Buckeyes once the season starts in August.

Ryan Day won’t tell us who has the upper hand in that battle at the moment, but after the scrimmage on Saturday, it looks like it could be McCord. Even so, it’s just one scrimmage. The Buckeyes have a lot of practices left to go this Spring and then of course the Spring Game.

The last time the Buckeyes had a quarterback battle they lost one of the guys battling for the job to the transfer portal. Could that happen again with whoever loses the battle this time around? Would either guy decide to go elsewhere if they don’t start this year?

I think the answer is yes, but only if one of the guys loses it. If McCord somehow loses the battle, I think he will transfer. It would be clear that he would have no shot to star at any point in his Ohio State football career, so he would leave to go somewhere that’s possible,

If McCord does win the battle, I still think Brown stays. If McCord plays as well as previous quarterbacks under Day have, he could potentially leave after this year. Doing that would allow Brown to start the next couple of seasons, or at least give him the chance to earn it in a competition.

I think either of them transferring out after the Spring Game like Jack Miller did in 2021 is unlikely. They will both be on the roster once the Fall rolls around. I tend to think that McCord will be the starter, but we still have a lot of time before anything is written in stone.
