Former Ohio State basketball player enters transfer portal again
By Ryan Stano
The 2018 recruiting class for the Ohio State basketball team came in with a lot of potential. Despite not being as highly rated as some of the other classes that Chris Holtmann would bring in, there were some freshmen who looked like they had promise.
One of those freshmen was Luther Muhammad. Muhammad made headlines when he mentioned he’d rather have the player he’s guarding score zero points than he himself score 20. It showed that he cared more about the success of the team rather than himself.
Unfortunately, the adulation for him was short-lived. Muhammad left the Ohio State basketball program after just two seasons. He finished those seasons averaging 7 points and 2 rebounds a game. While not much, his defense was certainly helpful for the team.
Muhammad left and transferred to Arizona State and played there for two seasons. He left Ohio State to get more playing time. What’s interesting is that he actually played much less once he got to Tempe. In fact, he averaged just 10 minutes a game this past season.
Now, Muhammad is transferring again. He has officially entered the transfer portal for his final season. It’s unclear where he will end up at this point, but he leaves another former Buckeye teammate in Alonzo Gaffney, who also transferred to Arizona State.
The transfer portal is now a much bigger part of the culture in basketball now that you can enter it freely. College basketball has essentially turned into free agency once a player has finished their freshman season. Coaches almost have to re-recruit their guys to stay on campus.
We’ll see where Muhammad eventually ends up once next season starts. It’ll be interesting to see if he plays more than he did when he was with the Sun Devils.
