Ohio State women’s basketball wins on last-second shot
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State women’s basketball team took on North Carolina in a game that would send the winner to the Sweet 16. The Buckeyes were coming off a comeback win against James Madison. North Carolina was coming off a game they survived against St. Johns.
It was a close game back and forth in the second half. In the end, the Buckeyes were tied with North Carolina with 1.8 seconds left and possession of the ball. Jacy Sheldon was the big hero and hit a shot to win it for the Buckeyes, giving them the 71-69 win.
It was a game that featured a lot of turnovers for both teams. North Carolina committed 18 of them while Ohio State had 21. Sheldon had a great overall game for the Ohio State women’s basketball team, scoring 16 points, grabbing 6 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists.
Taylor Mikesell was the one who led the Buckeyes in scoring, dropping 17 points. In all, four starters scored in double-digits in what was an extremely balanced effort. What really gave the Buckeyes the edge in this one was the free-throw disparity.
Ohio State shot 23 free throws, making 16 of them. North Carolina shot just 12 and made 10 of them. The number of makes from the line is what gave the Buckeyes the extra points they needed to win, even if they didn’t shoot a high percentage from the line.
Now the Buckeyes are in the Sweet 16. They have a chance to go even further with the type of team that they have. They will face the winner of UConn and Baylor. Those are two programs that have won national championships in recent years.
Ohio State will likely be rooting for the Bears, but they will be ready no matter which team they face. We’ll learn who it is closer to 11:30 tonight.
