Ohio State Women’s Hockey team falls short of national title
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State women’s hockey team was going for back-to-back national championships after winning a year ago. They faced fellow Big Ten foe Wisconsin for that national title. The Buckeyes had been riding high after hardly facing any adversity heading into this final game.
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to get it done. They fell to the Badgers after being shut out for the first time all season long, falling 1-0. That lone goal came in the first period and the Buckeyes were not able to respond in any of the following periods of play.
Ohio State led the country in faceoff percentage heading into the final game. It didn’t matter. They couldn’t win them when it mattered and couldn’t get their offense going. They really only got two or three really good chances at scoring some goals and they couldn’t capitalize.
The Ohio State women’s hockey team came into the title game averaging 4.22 goals per game. That was good enough for second-best in the country. The offense is what the Buckeyes have been able to hang their hat on all season long, up until this final game.
It was still a great season for these ladies. They made back-to-back national championship games. That’s extremely hard to do, no matter what sport it is. They will be one of the favorites to win it all next season as well. They just have to score more at the end.
Congrats to the Badgers and their goaltender. She played outstanding hockey and they deserved to win the game.
