The Ohio State basketball program will have its second-straight top-10 recruiting class coming in next season. This is despite the fact that the Buckeyes will be missing out on the NCAA Tournament this year. Chris Holtmann was still able to bring in some talented players.

One of those talented players is right here in the state of Ohio. That is Devin Royal out of Pickerington Central High School. Royal is the best player in the state of Ohio and is one of two players from the state in the Buckeyes’ 2023 recruiting class.

Royal is a 6’7 power forward who had a great season this past year. He was just named Mr. Basketball for the state of Ohio. Royal was sensational in his senior year and is still in the basketball tournament after his team won 57-53 over Olentangy Orange.

Royal is a wing that can really help the Buckeyes next season. He gives them a scoring punch that they desperately need with Brice Sensabaugh likely headed to the NBA next year. The Buckeyes need scoring to come from somewhere now that they lose their top two scorers from this year.

I think Royal will end up being the best recruit out of the guys that are coming in next season. He has the highest potential based on his body type and the way he plays. It’d be nice if they could get some help from Royal right away off the bench. I don’t see him starting right away.

Royal beat out Gabe Cupps for Mr. Basketball this season. Cupps won it last season and spurned the Ohio State basketball team’s efforts to recruit him. I’m glad to see a Buckeye win the award and hopefully that can continue for the next few years.
