Ohio State women’s basketball beats TTUN for third time
By Ryan Stano
It had never been done before. The Ohio State women’s basketball team was looking to beat Michigan for the third time this season. They were trying to do that in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. It was also the first game Jacy Sheldon had played since early February.
Sheldon ended up hitting a huge shot late in the game to give the Buckeyes a three-point lead. Sheldon has missed most of this season with a leg injury and returned today. She finished with just five points, but her leadership at the end of the game was huge.
The star of the game was Cotie McMahon. She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and she showed why. She had a game-high 28 points on 10/16 shooting and added 12 rebounds as well. McMahon had a huge steal at the end of the game as well.
The other player who stepped up in Ohio State’s 81-79 win over Michigan was Taylor Thierry. She had 20 points on her own on 8/11 shooting. Taylor Mikesell had 16 points too and hit 3/7 from deep. Those three players are why the Buckeyes came away victorious.
With this win, the Ohio State women’s basketball team will take on top-seeded IU. They have beaten the Buckeyes twice this year already and are one of the best teams in the country. They will take on the Hoosiers tomorrow at 2:30 pm ET on Big Ten Network.
If Ohio State can win this Big Ten Tournament, they have an excellent shot at getting a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament because of the teams they would’ve had to beat in order to do so. Kevin McGuff has his team playing some really good basketball at the end of the year.
The Buckeye women play right after the men tomorrow. It’s a great way to spend some hours on a Saturday!
