Today is the day when players start doing some workouts at the Combine. It’s a time for prospects to prove to teams that they deserve to be drafted high. Some Ohio State football players are trying to do the same thing during these workouts and improve their draft stock.

The player who probably has the most to gain is Dawand Jones. Jones was turning heads at the Senior Bowl with his play and his freakish measurements until he suffered an injury. Now he gets the chance to impress scouts even more with his numbers and his interviews.

Jones is a borderline first-round pick right now. He has been projected to be taken in the second round by most mock drafts I’ve seen. Being a 6’8 tackle that can bend and move is extremely impressive, but he doesn’t play left tackle. He’s a right tackle and will play that position at the next level.

Teams will still take a right tackle in the first round if they show that they are really good players that can instantly make a difference on the offensive line. I think Jones can do that. His size and strength make him a good asset to any team along the offensive line.

What can really sell Jones to teams and scouts will be his interviews. He’s a really good person that has a high football IQ. Those are two great characteristics to have. He’s also shown that he is an elite pass-protector at that position. Run blocking has been the one concern with him.

If Jones can prove to teams that he can get better opening holes in the run game, he absolutely could be taken in the late first round. That would give him a nice boost in a rookie contract. I hope some team does in fact make that decision.
