No. 1: Who will be calling plays in 2023?

One of the major storylines heading to the 2023 campaign is who will be calling the plays. Ryan Day announced last month that newly appointed offensive coordinator Brian Hartline would call plays this spring. This is the first indication that Day is actually thinking about handing off play-calling duties in his four-plus seasons as head coach.

But is Hartline up to the challenge? We know he can recruit with the best coaches in the country. Just look at his five-star reddened receiver’s room. He also can develop talent like no other coach in the nation as suggested by all his former players balling out in the NFL. I would assume that Hartline is just one of those guys that can excel at whatever he puts his mind to. Playcalling will probably be no different, especially with Ryan Day right there to help him get started.

But as Day hands off play calling for the spring, will he do the same come the fall? That’s an entirely different animal. I guess the question will be answered over the course of 15 practices and the spring game on April 15th.
