Ohio State Football: 3 Storylines heading into Spring ball
The Ohio State football team is less than a week away from its first spring practice. Here are some storylines to look out for.
The Ohio State football team and head coach Ryan Day have had a busy couple of months following its Peach Bowl defeat to Georgia. Recruiting, managing the transfer portal, workouts, and staff changes have all taken a toll on Ryan Days’ time. But next week, Day and his staff will actually get down to some real football.
And there’s plenty of actual football news to get to when it comes to Ohio State. The Buckeyes should come into the 2023 season as a top-five team and favorite to get back to the College Football Playoffs. But before we can get to that point some questions have to be answered. Here are three storylines to keep tabs on as we enter spring ball.
No. 3: How does the QB battle shake out?
This will be the most important storyline in spring practices. If Ohio State wants to get back to a national title game, then its quarterback play must be up to caliber. Kyle McCord and Devin Brown look the part as they are both top 50 national recruits in their respective classes and have been by all accounts model citizens on and off the practice field while in Columbus.
McCord will enter camp as the slight favorite having been on campus longer. He knows the playbook very well by all reports and has an awesome relationship with Marvin Harrison Jr. stemming back from their time in high school together at St. Joe’s Preop outside of Philadelphia.
But don’t count out Devin Brown as he has very good mobility and a rocket of an arm. Ryan Day did a fantastic job of identifying Brown and getting his commitment late in the 2022 recruiting process.
This competition could be won or lost here in the spring of 2023 and we need to see how this shakes out before practices end.
