Ohio State women’s basketball team clean up Big Ten Awards

The Ohio State women’s basketball team may not be in line to get a number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament like people thought they might after they started out 19-0. Since then, they’ve cooled down a bit. That doesn’t mean they can’t make a big run in the NCAA Tourney still.

Both the coaches and the media in the Big Ten have taken notice of how good this Ohio State women’s basketball team is. Awards came out today and several Buckeyes took home honors. Let’s start with a freshman who played great all year.

That freshman is Cotie McMahon. She won the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after her stellar year. She averaged 14 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 steals and shot 51.7% from the field. He really stepped up after Jacy Sheldon got hurt early in the year.

Not only did McMahon win Freshman of the Year, but she was also named Second-Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media and was named First-Team All-Freshman too. She was joined on the Second-Team by teammate Taylor Thierry.

Thierry had 13.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2 steals, and shot a whopping 62.8% from the field. He was the Buckeyes’ leading rebounder. One other Buckeye was named to an All-Big Ten team, and that was of course superstar Taylor Mikesell.

Mikesell led the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game. She also added 3.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals and shot over 40% from three. She was the best player the Buckeyes had all year because of Sheldon being out with her injury.

This is a really good team with a high ceiling. They play their first game in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday. If they could win the league, they might have an outside shot at getting a one-seed in the Tourney.
