Ohio State basketball: Chance for a historic run?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team finally got a win on Sunday afternoon when they were able to beat Illinois. It snapped a nine-game losing streak and gave the Buckeyes some confidence at the end of the season. Now, they have just two games left in the regular season.
Those two games are against Maryland and Michigan State. Neither of those teams is a powerhouse in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes have a shot to finish the season with two good wins. Those wins would be good to get heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Winning the Big Ten Tournament is the only chance that the Ohio State basketball team has to play in the postseason. It would give them an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Is there a chance for the Buckeyes to go on a historic run and win the Big Ten Tournament?
The short answer? No. One win does not give this team enough momentum for them to rip off a run like that. Because of how badly they’ve played most of the season, they will have to play Wednesday of the Big Ten Tournament week. That means in order to win it, they’d have to win games in five consecutive days.
For a team that struggles offensively and can go long stretches without scoring the ball, winning five days in a row is a really tall order. The Buckeyes would need to have Bruce Thornton, Brice Sensabaugh, and Justice Sueing all play incredibly well.
I don’t think that’s possible for such a young team that has dealt with a lot of struggles already. I doubt they even make it past Wednesday. Still, there’s always the hope that something miraculous can happen in the month of March. That’s what makes college basketball so great.
