Will the Ohio State Football team name a QB starter by Spring?
By Ryan Stano
For the first time since 2021, there will be a new starter at quarterback for the Ohio State football team. In that quarterback battle, C.J. Stroud emerged victorious and ended up being named a Heisman Finalist twice and taking the Bucks to the CFP in 2022.
One of the quarterbacks he beat out for that job is Kyle McCord. McCord finds himself battling for the job again, this time with Devin Brown. Both guys are former five-star quarterbacks and were very highly recruited. It’s going to be interesting to see which one wins the job.
The last time the Buckeyes had a quarterback battle, they didn’t announce a starter until the Fall. They wanted to take more time to see which players played the best during practice. This year, Ryan Day was asked if they would change course and name a starter after Spring ball.
Ryan Day says he’d like to name a starting quarterback for the Ohio State football team by Spring but won’t commit to it.
Day has decided that he’d certainly like to have a starter named by the time Spring ball is done, but won’t commit to it. The Spring Game will give us a much better idea of who the leader in the clubhouse is. Right now, Day did concede that McCord might have a slight advantage because he’s been in the program longer.
I’ve always been a big fan of McCord. Right now, I think he’ll win the job. That doesn’t mean I won’t change my mind after seeing him in the Spring. Brown is a very talented quarterback in his own right, and McCord didn’t blow me away in his one career start against Akron in 2021.
The Spring Game isn’t until mid-April, so we still have a couple of months to figure out who might have the upper hand. I bet McCord starts the Spring Game just because he’s the more veteran player. That won’t mean he is the assumed starter though.
We’ll just have to see what happens moving forward with this battle. It’s intriguing, to say the least.
