Ohio State basketball hits rock bottom after loss to Nebraska
By Ryan Stano
This is by far the worst moment for the Ohio State basketball team in the last six years. That’s how long Chris Holtmann has been in control of the program. This is the worst it’s gotten after his team lost its fifth-straight game by losing to Nebraska 63-60.
Ohio State has now lost to the two worst teams in the Big Ten by standings, having lost to both Nebraska and Minnesota. Well, that would be true except now Ohio State is the second-worst team in the Big Ten in the standings. They are now just 2-5 in Big Ten play.
Missed free throws played a big part in the loss. The Buckeyes were just 15-23 from the line. That was the difference in the game. This Ohio State basketball team has struggled to hit free throws all season long. It’s an issue that clearly isn’t getting fixed.
Another issue that isn’t getting fixed is the anemic offense. Ohio State scored just 22 points in the first half. They also just shot 35.7% from the field. You can’t win if you don’t hit shots and that’s been the biggest problem that this team has faced. They simply can’t hit shots.
Justice Sueing and Bruce Thornton were the worst culprits, only going 1-6 from the field each. Sueing is someone that the Buckeyes were supposed to be leaning on. Instead, he has been playing extremely poorly. His leadership has not been enough.
Chris Holtmann clearly has no more answers for this team. This is the worst it has been in his tenure. He already has postseason-winning issues. Now he can’t even win in the regular season to make the postseason. He needs to go at the end of the year.
Of course, he probably won’t. Gene Smith has decided he doesn’t care about how good the men’s basketball team is, so Holtmann will probably continue to coach this team.
