The Ohio State State basketball team needed to beat Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. In fact, it was a must-win scenario. Instead, we saw more of the same from them as they lost to Rutgers in overtime 68-64. It’s now their fourth-straight loss.

Quite frankly, this game never would’ve made it to overtime if not for Bruce Sensabaugh. The freshman has been the lone bright spot through this slide. He had 20 points and made four of his six threes. His offense was the only sustained offense the entire team could find.

The January slide is in full swing. Chris Holtmann has done this every year he’s been in charge of the Ohio State basketball program. This team is only getting worse, not better. They are now just 2-4 in Big Ten play and 10-7 overall. They’re actually in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament.

There’s no indication that the slide is going to stop anytime soon either. Ohio State hasn’t done anything better now that they did in the beginning of the season. Clearly they still can’t close games that are close. This season is a complete disaster right now.

If Holtmann can’t get this team to win some games soon, it’s going to be a lost year. There’s no reason they should be this bad with the amount of talent that they have on the roster. The mix of veterans and young guys should make this team much more formidable than they are.

The next chance for them to win is Wednesday night at Nebraska, who’s also a bad team. If they can’t win that game, the season may as well be over at that point.
