We were wondering who the Ohio State football program would name as the next offensive coordinator after Kevin Wilson decided to leave to be the head coach at Tulsa. We even speculated on some potential hires. Well, we at least got something right.

We got right that Brian Hartline was an option. He ended up being THE option, as the Buckeyes have promoted him to the job. This is the first time he will be in such a position. It’s unclear whether or not he will call plays, but this is still a great thing for the program.

First off, the Buckeyes keep their best recruiter happy. He recruits wide receivers at an elite level and develops them into first-round picks. He now has an opportunity to expand his horizons and do that with more offensive players. It also gives him added responsibility.

Hartline will eventually become a head coach. He’s too good of a coach not to be. But this keeps him in Columbus for a few years before that eventually becomes a reality. Hartline is one of the hardest workers on staff and will keep that going now that he is the OC.

This will still be Ryan Day’s offense. He is still the mastermind of the playbook even if he does give up play-calling duties. But Hartline will be more involved in the gameplan and will learn the skills he needs to eventually call plays. My guess is he will eventually call plays at some point.

This is a good thing for the Ohio State football program. This keeps their most important assistant coach happy. He can continue helping the Buckeyes get top-tier recruits and help them win games. As long as he’s in Columbus, Hartline will continue to do great things.
